1 David I. Laurenson, Mike J. Jackson, The University of Edinburgh, Kings Buildings, Mayfield Road, Edinburgh, UK, EH9 3JL Abstract The Java language has been used in the construction of a number of learning environments to enable students to explore mathematical concepts without the barrier of mathematical manipulation. The applets are designed to be flexible for educators, and flexible in usage to encourage exploration and experimentation, yet are compact to minimize download time. The use of the developed environments in a practical education scenario is described, showing how the tools are used for class instruction, tutoring support, and individual learning. Subjective and qualitative evidence is presented showing that where the environments are used by students there is a discernible improvement in understanding of the concepts that the environments address. The results of this process are generalized to show the type of concept that is suitable for such treatment, and those for which improvements are not discernible.

Interactive Learning of Control Concepts Using Easy Java Simulations
This paper deals with the creation of interactive computer simulations that can be used as virtual laboratories in the field of control engineering education. We introduce EJS, a Java-based tool designed to help create interactive scientific simulations, which has been extended to provide support for authors in this field. Creating interactive simulations using EJS involves the following three ...

متن کاملExploring the Effects of the Computational Experiment Approach to the Epistemic Beliefs, the Motivation, the Use of Modeling Indicators and Conceptual Understanding in Three Different Computational Learning Environments
Contemporary teaching and learning approaches expect students -at any level of educationto be active producers of knowledge. This leads to the need for creation of instructional strategies, learning environments and tasks that can offer students opportunities for active learning. Research argues that one of the most meaningful and engaging forms of active learning is modelling, that is using co...

This paper describes how multi-agent system technology can be used as the underpinning platform for voltage control in power systems. In this study, some FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) devices are properly designed to coordinate their decisions and actions in order to provide a coordinated secondary voltage control mechanism based on multi-agent theory. Each device here is modeled as ...
